What you’ll need:

* Any skull figure. It can be plastic, or wax, etc. You can find them at any craft
store this time of year.

* Pumpkin spice

* Dried pumpkin seed

* A large white plate

* A small bowl

* A bag large enough to hold your skull (I prefer using a black bag for this)

* A gold cord/thread/string.

* Your favorite incense. (I use frankincense)

* A piece of paper and a pen

STEP 1: Setup your altar. Decorate it for Halloween…and also include any symbols of money or prosperity you can dig up.

Think skulls…pirates… treasure… and any spooky figurines/decorations. Have fun with it.

STEP 2: Light your incense.

STEP 3: Pass your skull, the pumpkin spice, pumpkin seeds, plate, bowl, back, and gold cord through the incense smoke. Do this one at a time.

STEP 4: Mix the seeds and spice in the bowl. First stir counterclockwise to
banish negativity from your home.

Say: “As I stir, counter turn, ancestors, ancestors, I call to thee.

Ban the energy of negativity. From my home and from my heart. This moment, make it forever part.

STEP 5: Now, stir the seeds and spice clockwise. Say:

“As I stir, clock turn, ancestors, ancestors, I call to thee.

Bring a prosperous turn to me. Use your wit, your power flows. Harm to none, prosperity shows.”

STEP 6: Write down as many names of your deceased ancestors as you can on the paper.

Put it on the plate.

STEP 7: Set the skull on top of the paper.

STEP 8: Sprinkle the skull with your mixture of pumpkin spice and seeds.

STEP 9: Hold your hands over the skull and ask your ancestors to bring harmony and prosperity to your life… in your own kind and loving words.

Be real. Be emotional. Just be.

STEP 10: Next, cover the skull with the bag for 7 days.

STEP 11: On the 7th day, next Friday, take the skull, the spice, and pumpkin seeds, and place it all INTO the bag.

STEP 12: Tie it securely with the cord/thread/string.

STEP 13: Hide it in the west side of your basement, garage, or living quarters.

STEP 1: Setup a basic altar. Decorate it with anything representing Samhain or Halloween. Get creative… the more
fun you have with this, the better the spell will work.

STEP 2: Carve the red candle with your name, and deepest desire. Also carve a symbol in the candle representing
an area of your life you wish to improve.

Example: a dollar sign for wealth, a heart for love… a happy face for general happiness.

STEP 3: Anoint your candle with the oil.

STEP 4: Walk with your candle, charm bag, and herb to the kitchen where the water is boiling.

STEP 5: Set the candle near the pot, and light it.

STEP 6: Sprinkle a small handful of the herb into the water. Let the steam rise.

STEP 7: Pass your charm bag alternately through the steam and the candle smoke.

Spend 5 minutes doing this.

STEP 8: As you pass the charm bag, imagine what life would be like if the specific area of your life was exactly how you wish it to be. How would you feel?

STEP 9: Sleep with the charm bag under your pillow, and allow yourself to dream.

Practitioners of Wicca all over the world have many things in common. As a religion that celebrates life with rituals combining spirituality, music, dance, food and love, Wicca is becoming more and more popular all around the globe.

Modern Wicca is believed to follow the Celtic customs combining English and Welsh traditions. The Druids were people who arrived from unknown destinations and are believed to be the “teachers” of the Wiccan traditions. Although Wicca originated in Europe, it has been accepted and embraced internationally and evolved over the years in many countries, absorbing new traditions and rejecting some of its conventional views as it reaches for a larger and more widespread following. As people moved from one land to another, some branches of Wicca accepted more of the local traditions or customs. However, there are also many traditions in Wicca that remain the same over the centuries. The eight Sabbats are observed in most Wiccan traditions. However, they may be celebrated at different times of the year as the seasons differ between the two hemispheres. Worship of the Moon as Goddess is one of the main themes of the Wiccan way of life. Preservation and celebration of nature is another practice that is prevalent in most Wiccan variations. The elements, planets and other celestial bodies are also held in high esteem as they are viewed as the creators and guardians of the Universe. As Wicca spread around the world, a few of the groups alienated themselves from the rest of the Wiccan population by narrowing the boundaries of their practice. Dianic Wicca, which followed a tradition that originated in Italy, has evolved in America to become a formal feminine Goddess based tradition. Circle Wicca was founded by Americans Selena Fox and Jim Alan in 1974. The practitioners live in a two hundred acre Nature preserve in Wisconsin. The main difference of Circle Wicca from European style Wicca is that it has absorbed Shamanism and the Native American ways of healing and celebrations. Faery Wicca is of Irish origin with some links to Druidism. This may not be widely practiced in the Americas. However, African Wicca and its offshoots such as Voodoo were brought over to the Americas and have evolved to be part of witchcraft traditions in the southern parts of the United States including New Orleans in Louisiana. American Wiccan traditions have roots in Gardnerian, Celtic and Alexandrian Wicca. European Wicca follows the original and strict lead of Gardner whereas in the new World, Wicca was mostly influenced by Raymond Buckland who, fittingly, is called the Father of American Wicca. Although Gardnerian Wicca emphasizes the power of the Goddess over that of God, every practitioner, whether woman or man, has specific stages of advancement and have to work with the leaders of the group to reach higher and higher levels. Also, this Wiccan tradition did not allow self-initiation or solitary practices as a rule.

The religion of Wicca is based on ancient pagan beliefs that existed ever since the Earth was born. Pagans believe that the energy in the Universe manifests itself as all living things. No one person or thing has any more importance than another. All animate and inanimate things are created by the same energy, that of the Universe. Nature in its various shapes and forms constitute and encompass the life forms that belong to this Earth and to whom the Earth belongs. This rule enables all members of this religion to live freely without many restrictions and to practice freely without any fear. To illustrate this, if we just look around, we can see the effects of wars in the world. The countries who start the wars are the ones who usually end up destroying their people and their future. Stregheria is an ancient Italian term for witchcraft. In recent times, Italians also have used the term Stregoneria or Strega for the new pagan traditions that originate in Italy.

Strega was originally very similar to Wicca in many ways; the practitioners used to honor a large number of deities but the Moon Goddess and the Horned God is regarded as the most important divine entities. The Goddess and God are considered to be lovers and are called by many names including Diana and Dianus, Jana and Janus, Uni and Tagni, etc. As in Wicca, the followers of Strega also celebrate the seasons and practice rituals and spells to effect changes in their lives. The pantheon of Goddesses and Gods also include ancestors and deities that have specific duties or powers. Raven Grimassi is a well known scholar of Strega who has written several books on this subject. He even won the “Book of the Year” award for his book titled “The Wiccan Mysteries”. His award winning work also includes “The Encyclopedia of Wicca and Witchcraft“.

One of Grimassi’s ancestors included an Italian witch, Calenda Tavani, who had learned the art of witchcraft in Naples. Grimassi later supported the Arician Tradition of witchcraft and had many students including (supposedly) Scott Cunningham. When the Italian Immigrants arrived in North America, they were exposed to a lot of hardship and hatred. As a means of survival, Italian witchcraft thrived amidst the violence and racism of the early years in America. Many of the practices of European Mystery traditions, theories of witchcraft from Aegean/Mediterranean region and the old religion of Italy was incorporated into the Arician Tradition into which Strega evolved among the settlers in North America. The Arician Tradition was founded in 1998 by author Raven Grimassi as an introduction to Old Italian witchcraft when combined with the newer traditions.

Many ancient Strega rituals are mentioned in the Arician literature. In ancient Italy, the craft was usually passed on from the mother to the daughter. As one gets initiated to Strega, blood was exchanged and a new mark was made on the left thigh of the new member.

The witches gathered at night to perform the ritual of “calling down the Moon”. As early as 30B.C, witchcraft in Italy seems to have been an accepted form of lifestyle and worship. The main deity was Diana, who was known in Greece as Artemis, Apollo’s sister.

How can a deck of cards with esoteric pictures on it predict your future? Tarot cards have been the bone of contention among skeptics for long. But what they forget to see is the degree of sagacity and immense meaning that lies behind each card – something that can only come from centuries of observation and wisdom. The figures on tarot cards are not just some arbitrary pagan motifs. They are drawn from various elements of human nature, some embedded in mythology and some inspired from the characters on the stage of real life.

What is important to understand about tarot cards is that you have to first form a bond with them before they start talking to you. Isn’t it true for humans and animals too? Don’t you understand an article on physics better the second time you read it and still better the third time? Tarot is just the same. Which is why it is important to select a deck that appeals to you. Initially you have to refer to the reading-key often.

The more you practice the tarot and try to explore the meanings behind the cards, the more you shall come to see the various possibilities, the subtle messages that a card holds. In fact, that is the very beauty of tarot. A card does not always indicate a be-all-end-all outcome. It shows the various possibilities that the future stores for you. Pretty much like the If-then-else algorithms. It tells you what can happen if you do something and what can happen if you do not. And doesn’t that make sense? For if the future was hundred percent certain, wouldn’t we rather stop doing everything and await the destined. Destiny binds us with certain situations and choices. The ones we make become our karma.

So our future is a blend of destiny and karma. And that is what tarot cards reflect.

There are many different symbols used in Wicca that a true practitioner should know about. These Wicca symbols represent different types of energy and aspects of the spiritual world. The most basic to understand and develop a relationship with when it comes to Wicca symbols are the basic elements. These are the foundation of everything physical that you can touch. So let’s begin our study.

Earth is the first of the elements we need to talk about when it comes to Wicca symbols. The symbol for earth is an upside down triangle with a horizontal line running through it. Earth is the foundation of everything. It represents firmness, vision, stability, fertility, material abundance, and growth.

Earth is also represented on a compass as north. It is represented by the angel Raphael and is ruled by the planet mercury. Develop an understanding of this element as it is the foundation of everything. It is the physical world and it is where our food comes from. Not to mention the fact that it gives us a place to live. This is why it has been referred to as mother earth for so long. It feeds us, clothes us, nurtures us, and gives us home and hearth.

Water is the next element we need to talk about. Water is still a solid, but begins to move toward the realm of the elements that cannot be touched. All of the elements can be experienced, but you can’t pick up a handful of water like you can a handful of dirt. The symbol for water is an upside down triangle. Water represents intelligence, change, flow, intuition, inner knowledge, sympathy, and love.

West is the cardinal direction represented by water. Gabrielle is the angel associated with water and the planet associated with water is the moon. Water is the next of Wicca symbols to understand. It is the essence of human life. Without water, we would all die. It is the most essential element of survival.

Fire is the third of Wicca symbols and it is represented by a triangle right side up. Fire represents those energies of expansion, direct commitment, courage, purification, creativity, the higher self, and the will to dare.

West is the cardinal direction of fire and Michael is the angel represented by fire. The sun is the planet associated with fire. Fire is the next element because it can still be seen but never touched or grasped. As we move up the chart of the elements, we begin to move into those areas that can be experienced, but not touched or tasted as rocks and dirt can. Fire is necessary for warmth and cooking.

Air is the fourth of the Wicca symbols to develop an understanding about and it’s symbol is a right side up triangle with a horizontal line through the middle. Air is represented by south on the compass and includes aspects of communication, spontaneity, concentration, compassion, warrior ship, giving, concern, and empathy.

The planet Venus is associated with the element of air and Ariel is the angel. Air is that aspect of breathing, freedom, and movement which is necessary to the success and happiness of all living creatures.

The spirit is the fifth and final of Wicca symbols we will discuss here. The spirit is located on the compass directly in the middle of all the other elements. It is the balance between them all and includes the ability to shift from one to the next with ease. It represents understanding of all the other elements. Spirit is everything and everything is spirit.

The spirit is represented by the planet Saturn. It’s angel is Cassiel.

Develop an understanding of all of these Wicca symbols and use them on a daily basis. As you expand on your studies and learn how to be a witch and a Wiccan practitioner, your understanding of these elements will be absolutely essential to your growth.

Q. Do you worship the Devil (Satan)?
A. No, for three reasons.

First, we don’t venerate evil in any form: our chosen religion is a celebration and affirmation of life and living things, as opposed to their destruction or harm. As we believe that good or evil done will return upon the doer, this does not encourage doing evil.

Second, Satan is a figure in Judeo-Christian beliefs – originally not even an opponent of Yahweh, but more like his prosecuting attorney (as in the Book of Job). Those who do worship Satan actually accept the later Christian theology, with Satan as Yahweh’s opponent, but choose to support Satan’s side of the battle. We are not Christians or Satanists, and do not accept their theology or worldview, so we would no more worship Satan than, for instance, Christians would worship the Aztec God Quetzalcoatl; he simply has no place in our beliefs. (We prefer the figure of Pan, who does have horns but is a much nicer fellow.)

Third, we think history shows that, if you invest belief and emotion in any idea or thought-form, you give it strength and power in your own life – it becomes more real TO YOU. We have no wish to invite hostile entities into our lives and give them such power over us, which is why we don’t venerate any form we consider evil. That’s also why we’re shocked to see how much energy some Christians invest in Satan.

Q. Then why do I hear those things about you?
A. “Devil-worship”, baby-killing, cannibalism and all that? These are typical accusations made by one religion against another. The Syrians accused the Jews of ritual murders long before Christ; then the Romans accused the Christians (who at least claimed to be eating someone’s body and blood every week); then the Christians accused the Jews and Muslims and every other religion; today different Christian denominations even accuse each other. Making wild accusations not only sells newspapers, and books, and movies; it helps drum up support for the Religion Of Your Choice. This is a cynical use of hate, fear, and ignorance, but as long as it works, it will be used. (And there will always be psychotics willing to live up to the image – then claim “the Devil made me do it.”)

Q. If not Christian theology, what do you believe in?
A. Life. We see the entire Universe, all matter and energy, as bursting with life, loving its own living parts – including us – and gathered in one eternal dance. We try to catch the tune and dance to the beat.

Sometimes we call the leading dancers Light and Dark, or Sun and Moon, or the Lord and the Lady, Cernunnos and Ceridwen, Pan and Diana, or by other names. These represent the duality in all things – male and female, yang and yin – neither side of which can be denied or ignored, even within ourselves.

(We hope this helps us avoid the error that some worshipers of a single deity have made, such as thinking that “since God is all good and God is male, therefore anything female or feminine is evil.”)

Our feeling about the Gods is that they are teachers, family members, and fellow dancers: not some untouchable abstraction infinitely distant, but an intimate part of our own lives. Our feeling about other religions is that they, too, are part of the universal dance: not enemies, but fellow strugglers seeking as we do, to live and learn to keep time with the music.

Q. What are these ceremonies you perform and what are they for?
A. It depends on the moment. You may have seen a circle dance, or a Maypole dance, or a feast of “cakes and ale”, or just a group hug. (We like to have fun.) Possibly, you’ve seen us “cast a circle”. That’s one of our basic religious ceremonies.

When we “cast a circle”, we mark off a space as dedicated and protected for our use, rather like Christians consecrating a church. (The difference is, we don’t need a building, and we let the space go back to normal after we’ve used it.) Within this circle, we ask for the protection of guardians – call them the four elements of Air, Earth, Fire, and Water, or the four archangels Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, and Uriel – again, the names may vary. Then we invite the Lord and the Lady to be with us for a time. We have a nice visit, a little snack of cookies and wine (or fruit juice), and then everyone goes home. It’s very friendly.

Along the way, sometimes we ask for help with our problems, such as healing an injury or illness; if you believe in the power of prayer, it’s the same sort of thing – but we try to put our own energies into the task, rather than asking someone else to do all the work.

Q. How will what you are doing affect me?
A. If you’re not participating, then probably no more than any other religious service you watch from outside. If you’re shocked by other religions, you might choose to be shocked by ours. (Ours is just out where you can see it, instead of hidden by walls.) Or you might choose to accept our part of the universal dance as valid if different from your own. You might even choose to participate – and people of good will are generally welcome among us.

Even if you do participate, there’s no reason to take any effect from our services that you don’t choose to accept. Since – for our own sakes – we ask for nice things to happen, the biggest possible results involve no danger. If we ask for more harmony in the world, and your life becomes more harmonious, then you benefit from the same general effect as if a church’s prayer for world peace had worked. (After that, if you don’t like harmony, you could always work to make your own life more discordant; whatever suits you.)

Q. Do all Witches practice the same way you do?
A. There are about as many “denominations” of Witches as there are of Christians, and since no-one is forced to keep One True Orthodox Way, even a single group may do things differently from time to time. The two mottoes that apply here are “If it works, use it” – and “AN IT HARM NONE, do as you will.”

A. Ask one of us. We’re easy to talk with. Or read some books. Good books include Vivianne Crowley’s WICCA: the Old Religion in the New Age, Margot Adler’s Drawing Down the Moon, Starhawk’s The Spiral Dance, and Raymond Buckland’s Complete Guide to Witchcraft.

There’s also a lot of shocking nonsense and pulp fiction out there – notably in movies, paperback thrillers, and the sort of newspapers sold at supermarket cash registers; we can only ask you to take anything you find there with a skeptical pinch of salt.
